The Stock Market Reopened!

I'm pleased to announce that the Stock Market site is now linked into the ToO Chatroom! I'm not sure why I didn't do it this way from the start, I guess I was too interested in the technical project of trying to embed my own chat system to think of using Tim's, but since the original one stopped working I thought it would be a good idea to utilize our official Chat since it's already there waiting to be used.

The Stock Market now has its own official channel in the Chatroom, complete with a resident bot to provide basic information and keep you company. Thanks to Tim for permission and assistance in setting it up, and to Woody, Whitty, KF, and JCGJ for being my bot alpha testers.

You can use this portal to connect directly to the Stock Market channel on a page I created which embeds the chat in a window that also contains the stock ticker, or you can connect to the Chatroom in your usual way and then join #StockMarket to enter the new channel.



Also, I was finally able to track down and fix the problem with registration so new accounts should be able to be created again! The issue turned out to be the same one that was breaking the profile pages, so fixing it brought those back online as well. As far as I know everything on the site is now functional again. Let me know if you have problems with something.

It should be clear from the first post, but to reiterate: The Stock Market site is a replica of the stock system that used to be used here years ago, allowing people who are interested to interact with it and see what it was like since it's no longer compatible with our site here.

Important Announcement: Due to the nature of how the stock prices change (in a random direction each update following no trend, and with no limit on how high or low the value can go) it has become impossible for new members to participate in the market with their starting cash allowance as every stock is currently far too expensive. It's not fair to make them wait for prices to come back down, since there's no guarantee they will, so an adjustment must be made. Rather than attempt to scale the starting cash of new accounts, an approach which would require new calculations each time it is done due to continued fluctuations in value, I have decided that the value of each stock will be reset to their original starting price at least once a year. Individual stocks may have their values reset more often if they get particularly unreasonable. This will not affect the amount of stocks you currently own, you will keep what you have purchased, but it will change their market value.

Question. I keep trying to log in on the stock market with my correct username and password, and it says that it's the wrong password. I try to reset it, and it says my e-mail is the wrong one. Both the email and password are right but it won't let me in! Help?

I don't know if anyone ever still messes around on this at all from time to time, but if you do you probably noticed that the site had been offline for quite a while. Actually it was still online, it was just unusable because an underlying error was blocking index functionality due to something that got tangled up behind the scenes. Anyway I finally got that sorted out and you're able to load pages and log in again.

Some notes:

I reset all the stock values back to their defaults again since the prices had once more gotten things into an unusable state for any new members.

I disabled the option to "Receive a private message when the stock exchange is updated" because this caused issues if a user had turned this on and then stopped logging in regularly (as I expect people to do) so their inbox reached max capacity from these automated messages. This is a very minor thing, no one needed to have this as this site is just for messing around on for a couple minutes at a time off and on, I just mention it because that is a feature of the original stock market system so I want to acknowledge that it existed but is no longer in operation on this reproduction.

A recent change to some server settings caused weirdness in a few areas with how certain things displayed and behaved. I think I was able to fix everything, but please let me know if you notice something that doesn't seem to be working right.
