Facebook Connections

An amazing image!

If there's something on your mind that just doesn't seem to fall into any of the other categories, well, it quite likely belongs inside Joe Finneman's marketplace. Think of it as a general store for general discussions!

Facebook Connections

Post by bookworm »

You have to see this image my instructor just showed us in networking class!
This is a visual image of Facebook Friend connections.
Go to this page and click the link for the high-res picture. It’s amazing! (backup link)

Not only is it visually beautiful, but it’s incredibly insightful in determining cultural and geographical factors of Facebook use. You can see who is using it where, and who they are connecting too.

It really is.
Once we got over the awe of it we started analyzing it.
One interesting thing we noticed was that Russian Facebook use is virtually nonexistent. Look, the whole country is missing from the map.

Oh yeah... Looks like there are just a few users there. Europe has just about as much light spots as the US!

We analyzed it some more yesterday. My instructor is really captivated by it. And rightfully so.
Some of the things we noted:

Like the Russians, the Chinese also have virtually no Facebook presence. Unlike the Russians, this is expected because of the Great Firewall of China. (internet censorship)

In Brazil they speak Portuguese, so not surprisingly they have several connections going to Portugal.

Spain Facebook use is relatively low, except in Madrid (that white spot in the middle) which has connections going to the outlying areas in just about all directions.

Australian use is concentrated on the eastern coastline because that’s where the more populated cities are.

Indonesia is totally connected, the whole country is pure white.

Not much of Canada is visible on the map, but that’s because about 75% of Canadians live within 100 miles of the U.S. border, so there wouldn’t be much activity out in the northern part.

That's cool!

Wait- China has Internet censorship? Odd, considering a lot of Chinese and Japanese people have Internet addictions...

Yeah, China is notorious for their censorship - I've heard they have blocked searches for Tienanmen Square, except for government sites claiming it is a lie from the West. Heh.
The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish, but for all to come to repentance.

That's an amazing image, bookworm. It's hard to believe that one website can bring so many people together in that way.

Wow, that was really cool! I expected to see a decent amount coming from West Africa--everyone's using FB now :p

Not everyone...

No one in my house has it. Of course, we don't live in Africa. ;)

Wow, I just saw the image for the first time today. That is incredible! I can't imagine a person being able to create that image. Not to mention that the vast implications drawn there are amazing.

Use the chatroom! It's been active for a year, and most of you are missing it.

Yeah but I'm not that advanced in technology, so it seems like it would be so confusing to organize it all without going crazy. But yeah it probably is less complicated than I think.
