Jabberwocky

Ever heard of it?

"Books? You want books?! Ha! We've got books on hairy otters, on onions and on mars! All the fungus you could care for, plus, three triple zillion stars. We've got books on flossing teeth, plus three books on tossing sheep. If we spent our lives just counting books, we'd never get to sleep!" -Leopold the Librarian ("The Great Wishy Woz")

Have you ever heard of Jabberwocky?

Jabberwocky

Post by Lee »

I had an argument with my sister that MUST be resolved. ;) She'd never heard of the poem Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll and I said I think at least 75% of ToOers have heard of it. She said that only 20% had. (she'd never heard of it so she assumes no one else has) Anyway.... VOTE IN THE POLL. :x And *gasp* for those who haven't heard of it... CLICKY THE SPOILER. :x And I apologize for the randomness of this.... ;)

`
Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!"

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought --
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

"And, has thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!'
He chortled in his joy.

`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

Good.... It probably seems like a stupid topic, but even my mom hadn't read it!

Really? That’s surprising. I thought most people at least heard of it, even if they haven’t read it.

I hate to support your sister in any way, but I've never read (and barely have heard of) the poem. ;)

I don't know if I've actually read it--I've only read Through The Looking Glass, not Alice's Adventures in Wonderland--but I've definitely heard of it.

Isn't Jabberwocky in Through the Looking Glass? Yeah, I'm pretty sure it is.

But, yes, of course I've heard of it. \:D/

Yeah, what I meant when I said that is that I wasn't sure which poems were in which book.

To say.... well, I never read any of Lewis Carroll's books. But "Jabberwocky" was at least a term used in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, so I can associate the name. Never read the poem or anything. I never really saw even the first "Alice in Wonderland" - the cartoon one. So, I'm not sure that helps either you or your sister's cases... lol. I'm not one for uh... well, whatever Alice in Wonderland is. I just never got into it.

So iluvsns, what exactly are you asking? Your post asks if we’ve heard of it, but your poll asks if we’ve actually read it.

Uh, not in that way... lol. Sure, why not? Hallucinatory horror fairy tales!

No, I just never got into Alice in Wonderland as it was... I know, I can't accurately say why. Maybe it just wasn't popular in my childhood. I love the Tim Burton version though. :D But I don't know how different that one is from the cartoon version...

Yes, I have heard of the Jabberwocky poem, and have heard it recited :) And I saw the recent Alice film, though not the original cartoon.

Use the chatroom! It's been active for a year, and most of you are missing it.
"Every time I start banging rocks together to make a beat, I feel all guilty and I need to repent for my sinful ways. :(" - Jelly
"I actually want to see this happen... the controversy would be legendary. :o" - American Eagle
":hilarious: This ladies and gentlemen is the founding of: 'The Awkward Club!'" - Steve
"Happy birthday, big Mercy! \:D/ \:D/" - Whitty Whit

I've read it for school, and Dr. Watson had it memorized at a certain point...not sure if he can still quote the entire thing or not. \:D/
The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish, but for all to come to repentance.

Oops. I mean have you heard of it in the poll.... :D That was what the argument actually was. Is Jabberwocky a well-known piece of poetry? I'll fix that.
