Words That Make You Cringe

If there's something on your mind that just doesn't seem to fall into any of the other categories, well, it quite likely belongs inside Joe Finneman's marketplace. Think of it as a general store for general discussions!

Words That Make You Cringe

Post by shadowdog »

Are there any words that you just can't stand???

For example:

I hate the word 'Gauze'

My sister hates words like:

Moist
Nugget
Crusty
Supple
Nibblet

She cringes every time she hears these words

What about you guys?
Are there any words you don't like?

I know this is a funny topic.

Pajamas or jammies, and sneakers. Who ever thought of those words anyways? They're so dumb. :x

Belch. I hate it. It sounds so disgusting. Which makes sense of course, but still, I don't like it.

Besides that, I can't really think of anything. Although I do agree with ric about "jammies". It doesn't make me cringe, but it definitely sounds dumb.

A friend of mine hates the word legit. Of course, everyone tries to use it every way they can when they're around her.

I can't stand "welp" As in, when you get a bug bite and it "welps" up. I don't know why, but it always send shivers up my spine.

I agree, V-Lady. Belch is a gross word in general. I'm sure that there are 50 more that I'm forgetting, but that's my main one.

'Monies'! I know it's technically acceptable but, I'm convinced that it's impossible for an adult to say and not sound like a four year old. It just bugs me!

Also... committed should really be commit.

I once hated it when people would say "epic fail" in real life, but it doesn't bother me anymore. I think it was just the people who said it. ;)

I hate even-slightly-crude words; like "burp", aaaaaaand I won't even say the others so they won't be in my posting history. \:D/

Hmmm... 'daft' is a bit annoying when it's being spoken by someone who's not British or Australian. :-k

There are a few words I'm not fond of...I agree with your sister on "supple" and "nibblet", and I have a friend who can't stand the word "moist" as well...but there's one word that i positively can't stand...to the point of not being able to even type it out here.

"Moist" is the one that came to my mind as well... You can say it in a really creepy way and then it makes me cringe even more. There was a movie I recall in the late 90s that none of you will ever have seen I'm sure, starring Oliver Platt and Stanley Tucci somewhat in the style of Laurel and Hardy, where the creepy antagonist guy used that word. Eww.

I can kind of see your point with committed to commit... but to me, this sentence wouldn't feel right in this academic paper if it wasn't committed: "Self-plagiarism can seem to be an offence of quite another order to that committed when passing off somebody else's words as one's own." (Sikes, Pat. "Will the real author come forward? Questions of ethics, plagiarism, theft and collusion in academic research writing" International Journal of Research & Method in Education 32.1 (2009): 13-24. Print.)

*I might have just given you the bibliography for that quote...*

And... I don't think any words bother me. I'm not a person who tends to point out people's wrongs in grammar, even though you'd be amazed when I can sense it. *fanfiction and the people who need a beta, yet never get one* Nor do I necessarily... in lite, care, how they use a word. I'm not great at that myself. I do have a favorite word. lol.
