THE RAFFLE
My opininon of the raffle.
THE RAFFLE
I know what I'm about to say will be considered radical,
But, the raffle is driven by greed, an obsession for money.
This is why I do not think the raffle should continue on the toO.
Would you all support the lottery in real life?
Why mimick it here, especially on a Christian forum?
Those here on the toO who do not have alot of money would like alot more, they buy tickets, they become a slave to the idea that they might win.
It's simple,
EXPLOITATION OF THE POOR!
I think it is horrible that on the toO we would allow such a thing.

But ToO money is pretty much worthless so by indulging in a raffle we won't really be losing anything and I don't think anyone here is greedy for ToO money...so I don't imagine anyone being a slave to the ToO lottery...if they are then that's kind of weird, they may need counseling.
Mind if I ask the reason for the raffle, then?Tyler wrote:But ToO money is pretty much worthless so by indulging in a raffle we won't really be losing anything and I don't think anyone here is greedy for ToO money...so I don't imagine anyone being a slave to the ToO lottery...if they are then that's kind of weird, they may need counseling.

Are you trying to imply that every raffle ever is based on greed and "exploitation of the poor" and no other purpose? It's basically just there as a fun little side feature. I don't see it destroying lives or whatever you propose it's purpose is. But anyway, it's been there since the ToO opened...I don't see a reason to remove it.
Also, welcome to the ToO.
Also, welcome to the ToO.
Thank you for the welcome.
(By the way, I know you are correct, However, Exaggeration and building straw-men is a key component in practice for debate.)

Also, countless people have already complained about it. Some member's sig basically said, If you don't like the lottery, just stay away from it and don't pay attention to it.

Hmm... my opinion of this is swaying. I'm now supporting removing it, for two main reasons: (1) the principle of the thing. Honestly, it doesn't look Christlike to outsiders; it looks like The ToO has it's own lottery. (Basically, we do.) 1 Thessalonians 5:22: "Abstain from all appearance of evil." Pretend lottery or not, it still breaks this commandment. (2) It really doesn't have a purpose anymore. It used to be one of the main parts of ToO's history, but it isn't even popular anymore. Most drawings don't have enough users, so no drawing is held. We also have lots of contest, games, posting and other ways to make money, so it's really not needed anymore.
I say we remove it.
I say we remove it.

Or we could... stop having this debate every year...

Things are quite different now than before the upgrade. The ToO has changed, and I think this administration should be the one to remove the lottery (for the reasons I listed above).DanP740 wrote:Or we could... stop having this debate every year...

My philosophy is that if you're stupid enough to waste money on the small chances of earning a lot more money than you invested, then you deserve to lose your money.
Only once have I bought a ticket. It was the winning ticket. I quit while I was ahead.

How are things different than before the upgrade?

Quoting from what I said above:Tyler wrote:How are things different than before the upgrade?
Every "drawing" used to have at least 10-20 users every time, but now, not so much. We have plenty of other ways to make (and waste) money. I'm just giving my opinion.American Eagle wrote:(2) It really doesn't have a purpose anymore. If people want to waste their time in buying tickets, I say let them.

Does anyone actually want to keep the lottery? Why?

Do people buy them every week? If yes, please continue to the bottom of this post.American Eagle wrote:Does anyone actually want to keep the lottery? Why?

I don't recall it being very important in the ToO's history... and I've been here for 3 years before you...It used to be one of the main parts of ToO's history (before the upgrade)
And... I may not use it much anymore, since I don't have $700,000 , but like Termite said, if people want to waste their money on it (and maybe win it back), that's what they want to do....
