Ah, that makes sense.SoccerLOTR wrote:I'm guessing because they are what created the holes of the doughnuts...and would otherwise fill that gap.
Ever wondered why doughnuts are called gravy rings in Ireland?
Thanks for answering the question of the 'holes'!SoccerLOTR wrote:I actually have...I'm guessing because they are what created the holes of the doughnuts...and would otherwise fill that gap.bookworm wrote:Have you ever wondered why those balls of dough are called doughnut holes when they aren’t a hole? Nope...but now I am! Though it reminds me...the nutty doughnuts are good too...Smaug the dragon wrote:Have you ever wondered where the 'nut' part of 'doughnut' comes from?
As far as the 'nut' in the word 'doughnut', I've always thought that it came from the kind of nut in the phrase 'nuts and bolts'.
Because it's the only type of nut I know of that has a hole in the middle.

They most likely make them as plain bread, or maybe something a bit sweeter, then use it to sop up all the extra gravy when supper's finished from all the meat they eat... or something like that. Logically.bookworm wrote:What about this?I want an explanation!bookworm wrote:Ever wondered why doughnuts are called gravy rings in Ireland?

I think this should be moved back because people are having serious discussion on this topic.
