Gary Locke
Gary Locke
So yesterday I decided to email Gary Locke, because I've been doing some art work and needed some advice and critique. About 2 minutes after I sent the email he responded and said to call him and gave me his phone number. Sooo . . . Gary Locke and I had a nice half-hour long conversation yesterday afternoon. We talked about art, and podcasts, and churches...he's a really cool guy.
One thing that he said that I thought you might find interesting, is that he actually doesn't like the new Whit that he drew. Or pretty much any of the new characters. He said that he didn't like the photo-realistic-ness that they were approaching, because he prefers a more cartoony style. He said that too many cooks (or art directors) spoil the soup (or drawing). This may be one of the problems with the new art work...too many people getting too picky can hurt the creativity of the artist.
ANYWAY...it was REALLY cool to be able to talk to him, and we will probably get back in touch in the near future.

That is very cool!
I also prefer his older, cartoon-style drawings more.

Whoa, that's awesome!
I'm glad that you two were able to talk. Gary Locke sounds like one more example of the many amazing people involved with Odyssey! How many people would take the time to do that? Amazing.

I thought the new ones were the cartoony ones...

Use the chatroom! It's been active for a year, and most of you are missing it.
The artwork for volumes 51 and after isn't quite so cartoony anymore.DanP740 wrote:I thought the new ones were the cartoony ones...

... the people have heads three times the size of their bodies... how is that not cartoony?

Very interesting. Bob Booth, it's awesome that you took the initiative to contact G. Locke and got to speak with him! Thanks for sharing his views on the new artwork. I would not have thought that he does not like his own work.
