...
The physical aspects of D&D are greatly exaggerated in every single medium I've heard. The people who do fully LARP/live-action games are in/famous largely because amongst the entire paper/pencil community they're fairly unusual.
It's essentially, by my understanding and on the average, like playing a console RPG sans-sprites and with the GM, not the 'system', doing the calculations.
... that said, I would play GURPS in science-fiction universes of my own creation with a vast preference over D&D.

Yeah I know people who play D&D... and they don't run around in the woods and have evil things magically appear, and don't summon demons into their tents, etc.
They just sit there and drink pop and roll dice. Boring, but not especially demonic.

There's a lot of controversy, caused by those who distinctly think that anything in any sort of fantasy world involving demons and dragons and monsters and [shock horror GSAP] dungeons obviously is evil. Lots of people point to it as the postergame of 'ZOMG CULT GAME', but seriously, it's just a game. Those who get wrapped up in the entire game are, frankly, stupid. Denouncing the entire game is kind of illogical; there are other games that are equally encouraging of demon, etc.
If you're worried about demonic influences, i.e: being desensitized to demons and etc, what else are you watching/playing? You probably get more negative influence watching MTV for six hours, or watching Harry Potter, or playing a FPS game in which you have to kill as many innocent civilians as possible. If you're squeamish about doing any of that (or you're not particularly interested in gaming at all...) maybe debating about D&D without playing it is out of your line of arguing.
... that said, it can be potential for demonic activity ONLY IF those who get obsessed with the game and the fantasy therein take it too far. It would be particularly occultic if it encouraged you to utilize Tarot Cards, or taught you to summon demons, etc, etc, et cetera.

Oh, and my weird friends who play D&D also play D&D based super hero and Star Wars games, too... which eliminates the Golly Gee Whilikers! MAGIC CASTINGZ & DRAGONBALL ZERS!!!!!

As for my own opinions, my only problem is the 'magic' and 'spells' that are in the game. I've witnessed gameplay before, and while it isn't real, I don't think it's wise to use them even in 'pretend'. That's my problem.
I don't think it's smart to dismiss the game as harmless, as some of you seem to do. There are people out there who got into things they shouldn't have b/c of the game. I've done study on it, and there are a lot of things not to like in there.
Actually, I do have another problem, and, like Brian, I think it's boring.

Trent dear, I think I just figured out your problem.Trent DeWhite wrote:David and DeWhite!
If only we had voted for them.

I think that there are a lot of things that have the potential for evil. Some people will always find it, while many more will not even try. I'm not overly familiar with this game, so I can't speak to it's merits and faults, but usually a knee-jerk "Ahhh! It's evil!!!" reaction is unhelpful.

If people have a possibility to get invovled in the supernatural by playing, wouldn't it be a good idea to have Christians in there to lead them to Christ? Besides playing with an Oujia board or Tarot cards would definetly be more likely to open demons up to you, not a game where good faces evil and, in general, wins.

I suppose you have a point, but I like the idea of using the Gospel and Scripture rather then a game.Top Cat wrote:If people have a possibility to get invovled in the supernatural by playing, wouldn't it be a good idea to have Christians in there to lead them to Christ?
Yeah, you're right. Those are worse, I'd say. But that doesn't change the fact that D&D can be bad. And if you take the 'magic' into consideration, then it usually is. To what extent, I think, depends on the situation.Top Cat wrote:Besides playing with an Oujia board or Tarot cards would definetly be more likely to open demons up to you, not a game where good faces evil and, in general, wins.
