Two unrelated rants this week. One on a mainstream controversy, and a more typical one on some issues I saw in a game myself.

First, of course, the challenged review disaster from the Texans/Lions game on Thanksgiving.
I’m so incredulous about this I don’t even have much to say, because words shouldn’t be needed here, the idiocy is obvious. Houston scores a touchdown on a run where the runner was down, so the Lion’s coach throws the challenge flag so it will be reviewed. Only one problem, scoring plays are already automatically reviewed. Apparently that means you can’t challenge them anymore, so not only are the Lions penalized for that, but the play is then not reviewed! Yeah, if you demand a review of a play that is already being reviewed, they don’t review it. Who in the world came up with that setup? It makes absolutely no sense at all! If the coach hadn’t done anything, it would have been reviewed and overturned, and the Lions would have won the game. Okay, so he challenges it. Penalize the team, fine, but you have to still do the review! Absolutely ludicrous. Not only is it illogical, but in this case it actually cost the game.

Then, two mistakes late in the Seahawks/Dolphins game.
On the final, and it turned out game winning, drive, a Seattle defender was flagged for a helmet to helmet hit on the Miami quarterback that extended the drive. Replay showed it wasn’t even close, he hit with his shoulder. This is the umpteenth time I’ve seen this happen, and it is absolutely ridiculous. I know about the ‘error on the side of caution’ but seriously, I have seen more helmet to helmet hits that weren’t called than legitimate ones that were, and far more false helmet to helmet calls than real ones. So anyway, that gave Miami a break there.
Then, counting down the final seconds, there was a penalty on the Dolphins. I don’t recall exactly what it was, but it doesn’t matter, an offensive penalty should have been a runoff because the clock was going. They had one timeout left, so they could have opted to use that instead, but they didn’t have to do either. They kept the timeout, and there was no runoff. This allowed them to run another play, take the clock to three seconds, and call their timeout to kick the field goal. This error changed the outcome of the game, because they shouldn’t have been able to do that. They would have either used their last timeout on the previous play, or taken the runoff, and either way the game would have gone to overtime.

As I’m sure I’ve said before, I detest any officiating mistakes, but especially ones that change the outcome of the game; that is absolutely inexcusable.
