Leah's Crossing
I had to get something in to The Scribbler even though it was no where near finished with my story. I will have to start where I left off.
Leah gave a little smile when she saw we were all friends. She slowly took a deep breath and slowly began to tell her story.
I am from California. My dad is a violinist...or was a violinist then he was in a car wreck with my mother, she died and he was so depressed about her death and felt that he had caused it. He refueled to play the violin, he lost his job at the orchestra and lost all hope and became an alcoholic.
When he would drink he would hit us, my siblings and I, My older brother and I got jobs so that we can support the family and we had our mother's insurance money. It did not last that long. My brother went out looking for a better job, leaving me and my sisters to help our father.
After Jin, that's my brother, left my father became more violent and depressed. He started to treat us very badly. I wanted to go look for Jin but he did not tell us where he went.
I took my sisters to my friend's house and told her mom to keep them there and if our father came to call the police. Her mom knew what we were going through and I knew she would help. After I ran off, I got some people to help. Only they weren't really good people they were just street thugs and nut jobs. You know.
They didn't treat me any better than my father did. I had to run from them and ended up in Texas. I was afraid to look for Jin because I had no idea if my sisters were safe or if my father was looking for me.
So I got a job as a waitress, under a different name, and I lied about how old I was, but only a year, I am sixteen they think I am seventeen and in college. But that is not true I had to drop out of high school, not that my father noticed. Jin was a little upset but he understood why.
I haven't been able to try to find him. Before now yet I was going to find someone to help me when some drunk smashed into me. And hear I am.
All of us looked at her with understanding faces, or at least we were trying to understand. A couple of us even had tears in our eyes. Nell had been holding her hand the whole time now gave it a gentle squeeze.
N- Dear that is a sad story, would you mind if we helped you?
L- No, I wouldn’t mind at all. I am rather sick of what my life has become.
N-Isn't there always a time where we come to the same conclusion.
Everyone nodded as fresh tears came from the corners of Leah’s eyes.
N- I can't explain how I know but I know that there is more than you are sharing, and tis ok that you don't want to. All that matters is that someone cares now.
A couple of our crew decided that it would be better if they left so they excused themselves and went to go find some coffee and something edible. I stayed behind with Nell, Frank and Chandler. Nell continued to hold her hand, as Frank came to the other side and hold the other.
N- We will have someone protect you, and we will look for Jin, and find out if your sisters are ok. Right now we need to focus on getting you well.
L-yes, that would be good. Leah noticed Nellie's cross for the first time. It was a beautiful enamel and gold cross with a tinny garnet in the middle that Andrea had given to her for a present.
L- Are you a Christian?
N- Yes, we are all Christians. Are you one?
L- No, my family wasn't really into the religious sort of stuff. You said something about everyone having a time when they are sick of how there life is what did you mean?
N- I mean that there is more than one way to live life. There is the way of the world, in which most people live. And then there are the people who live according to the way of the lord.
L- Jesus?
N- Yes, you have the way of it.
L- You are Irish aren’t you, I had a pen pal from Ireland once, and she grew out of it I guess. I haven’t heard from her in a long time.
Nell smiled her gentle smile. and looked at Frank,
N- Would you like to add something?
F- No you are doing well so far, we will just be here for the support.
N- Most Christens live there life differently from the world. They try to live life according to God's plan. Have you ever read a bible?
L- No, I mean I have seen one but I never read anything.
N- Would you mind starting now? There are many nice things in it, things to give you courage in times of trouble and lift your spirit. Many nice things and things to help you live a life that is according to God. No one said that it is a great life with fairies and cupcakes, but It is better in the end because you will be in Heaven with the Lord. Would you like to try?
L- Yes,
Nell pulled a small bible out of her purse, explaining that she always carried one around with her, just in case she wanted to read it. Opened it to the book of psalms. She explained it and they started to read. The others returned after a while. Then after a few minutes Frank suggested something, cautiously.
F- Have you ever prayed before? I mean really prayed?
L- No I have never done that.
F- Would you like us to pray with you?
She did not answer but nodded her head as she closed her eyes and squeezed Nell and Franks’ hands. She prayed in earnest for the first time. Asking for God’s forgiveness and mercy. For a moment we all forgot our theological differences and focused on what matters. God. We prayed to him. And listened as one girl pored her heart out to Him, and opened the door that He had been patently knocking at for a long time. I am not sure how appropriate it is for me to say this but it was a beautiful moment and not to unlike my own conversion.
A few days later she was well enough to leave. Catspaw had been working with the Midland police and found that Jin had gone to Alaska. And that her sisters were now adopted by the family that Leah had left them with. Their father sadly had died. Catspaw, Frank and Chandler all went to California to talk with the sisters and their new family and to tell the story to the police.
Nellie, Leah, Myself and AIOP went to Alaska to see if they could find Jin, and maybe even find something out about Andrea.
The rest of the crew flew off to the cornhusker state, Nebraska. Stay tuned for the next edition of Odyssey Enigma… Of Salmon and Corn.
