LCMS Q&A

Might as well...
We believe this:
I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
and born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into heck.
On the third day He rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Christian church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen

Thanks Haymitch, I've been wanting to learn about the Missouri Synod for awhile now. First off do you know Dr. Veith? I've read some of his writings and was led to believe he was a big name in the LCMS. Also could you maybe provide a link to a website that gives some of your basic doctrines?
Which creed is that?
What are is the LCMS views on the real presence in the Eucharist?
Do you have priests? Or do you call them pastors?
Does the LCMS practice the sacrament of confession?

@CD It's the Apostles Creed. For some reason we have Communion on every other Sunday. So we use the Nicene then and the Apostles the every other week.
I grabbed it off Wikipedia. And Catholic means Universal. So at one point to avoid confusion they changed that.
Every other week.
No we do not.
@Ayn Rand I have never heard of him.

Apostles.
We believe Jesus's body and blood are in with and under the bread and wine in Eucharist.
We call them Pastors.
No.

Edit: To clarify, I realize you do not consider confession a sacrament. I was more asking if pastors in the LCMS listen to confessions.
Do you use the prayers in the small catechism every day?
What is your association with other Lutheran denominations?

No we do not consider a sacrament.
No.
I think there are several "sister" denominations that we agree with enough to take communion together. But I'm not sure.

What's your view on modesty? For both sexes.

Uh, modesty is the best policy.

My view. Use your brain. God gave it to you for a reason, it's up to you to use it. I'm not all out you have to do this or this. But you are an example and you don't want to be attracting the wrong kind of people.

I think he meant more of the type of clothing. I'm sitting here in a band shirt that isn't skin tight but definitely shows I'm a girl.

Good or bad? Skirts or pants? Etc.

It's up to the individual. Just don't go to one extreme or the other. On the one you have cardboard boxes on the other you have... I'm definitely not one of the skirt people.

So you think it's okay for girls to wear pants?

Would you ever marry someone who wasn't Lutheran?

Yes.
Ayn Rand wrote:Would you ever marry someone who wasn't Lutheran?
I really don't know. I haven't thought about it much. I definitely wouldn't start going to different church if I got married to them.

What is your denominations position on the deuterocanonical books?

Seeing as I had to look them up, I do not think we hold them as canon.

Do you believe that miracles happen in the present age?
What is your view of the Early Church? i.e. do you think your denomination has a connection to it or studies it very much?

Yes, why wouldn't they?
It was the Early Church. We don't really study it. It was just there.

You'd be surprised how many Protestant denominations don't believe any more.
Are you saying there just isn't much to study from the Early Church?
