Album releases - your opinion?
Today while reading the comments on the AIO Facebook page, I was reminded of this issue and wanted to take an official polling of the ToO. I know it's been discussed before, but I don't think a poll has been made.
Anyway - I am of the opinion that they should go back to selling the albums AFTER the shows air. I have really disliked it with the Green Ring Conspiracy - people here had listened to the entire thing and were discussing it in the spoiler ridden thread long before it aired. There has been no build up of suspense week by week, and for those of us who choose to listen when it airs, not much discussion. All those who've already heard know the answers to our speculations and have talked about the album in it's entirety already, so haven't really posted on the episode review threads.
So my position is that I wish they wouldn't release the albums early - what do you think? Maybe if enough people don't like it, FotF would switch back! Just like Officer Harley - only 20 people complained and he's been blacklisted for years!

The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish, but for all to come to repentance. ♡
I agree because I know that it's not going to be every time that I get to listen to a new album like I did this time Normally, I'll have to wait week after week to listen. So I understand exactly what you mean A little bit in advance, yes, but not this much. Spoilers float around way too much, and it spoils it for those who haven't heard it yet

I personally don't think that it should be available before it comes out on radio at all. What do you think the fans did before iTunes and Amazon? I guess it's okay to have it available when the album is airing, but definitely not before. It makes it hard for those of us who want to be patient to wait when all of our friends have heard the whole album already. *cough-cough* Marvin! *cough-cough* Plus, I just found out who the Stilletto is the other day just because someone listened early and couldn't keep their mouth shut. >:(

I agree with Christian A. I'm listening to album 53 on the radio, but it seems like alot of people bought the album months ago. I wish they would wait to release the album until it at least starts airing on the radio.
I agree too.
Did you know it's already all on youtube? That's kinda bad...
I think they do that to get more sales though.

Because I want to have the hard copy without having to pay twice for the download AND the hard copy, I had to wait for a month while everyone had heard it, having to avoid the ToO, dodging loose spoilers left and right (This was the FIRST Odyssey saga I've ever heard where I DIDN'T know how it was going to end first before I heard it, so I didn't want it to get spoiled!). Then I was finally able to get the hard copy. Then I listen to it slowly, to draw out suspense and make it funner. I REALLY don't want them to do this again. 54 will have 3 53-related episodes, and I would like to find out about them when everyone else does. Then, no more of this painful TORTURE!!!
my opinion is that they show have an album pass that you can buy starting about a month before it starts to air on the radio, when you buy it you get a couple minute preview of the album that you get to listen to right away, then everytime an episode airs on the radio you'd get an email or something containing the download link for you to download that episode, then a month or two after the last episode has aired it would be available in stores

I like the releases the way they are. My local station does not air AIO anymore and the only way I can listen via radio is to get up at 7 in the morning (Central Time) and use my HisKids receiver. That is not a big deal except for the fact that there is only one room in the house where I get decent reception and it is not my bedroom. Listening online is an option except I can never remember to listen and I don't like FOTF's online player. Also having the albums before the episodes air means that if I miss an episode on the radio, I can use my album to catch up on what I miss. Not to mention being able to listen in my truck while I'm out, which I can't do with my HisKids receiver.

I miss the days where everyone was kept in suspense as they aired the episodes once a week. It spawned much interesting speculation and conversation on this board, which has been lacking for the last couple years (as Laura started by pointing out, nobody talks about it anymore, because the answers are already out there). This board has become deader than a dead thing that's dead. You would never expect a TV show to release the Blu-ray box set before the TV airings, would you? Of course not, because it would destroy the ratings.
Although I listen to the episodes in pace with or behind the radio/internet airings, I'm still missing the hype and excitement of being part of the crazed community anticipating the next episode. I'm left in my canoe, paddling hard to see around the next corner, while other people are zooming past me on their motorboats, blasting Odyssey at top volume. It's the feeling of being in the same boat as everyone else that's missing nowadays, and that's what I miss the most. (Remember when we'd all stay up late on Wednesday nights waiting for the new upload?) But even though we at the ToO are a vocal bunch, we're still a puny minority, and shouldn't expect Focus to cater to us. (We shouldn't, but we do!)
Reddo pointed out a great strategy for the downloads, one already being implemented in online TV shows and episodic video games. Sell people a "season pass" that allows them to pay all at once for the whole album, but release the episodes one at a time. That keeps them from listening far ahead of the rest of us. As for the retail albums, Focus should try to time the releases to coincide with the season finales. Again, it gives no one a listening advantage, but doesn't make us wait half a year for the albums, either.
I don't want to convey an "if I can't listen early, nobody can" message. If your friends can drive to their destination while you choose to enjoy the nice day and walk, that's great for them. Sometimes, though, it's nice to walk with your friends.

I wasn't sure what to say when I saw this thread yesterday, but now I do: Ditto what Boswell said. As usual, Boswell's post was eloquent, insightful, and summed up the thoughts I've had (and more!)

I did not like it when they released the physical album first. I hated it when the released the digital download before this brand new story arc began! It's like walking on eggshells when I'm online! I have to be careful of where and what I read. I found out Monty was coming back before I heard the first part because of a comment someon made! I hate this! This is not what the fan community should be! I don't want to close my eyes and leave websites like that. I also like being able to talk about every new episode with people who didn't already hear a month ago. I don't know what AIO is thinking. No suspense, no depth, no nothing!

Well, yeah, there are multiple problems with the current strategy that have already been addressed.
For one, its just not a smart business move to put something on the market before it airs... no one does that. Well, okay, it has been done rarely, but it never has good results.
And the anticipation is killed. I've posted in a few threads but I can't even take part in the reviews for specific episodes because I listened to the whole thing and once and don't remember what happened in what episode exactly, especially since the episodes in 53 don't have unique names.
Now there is no buildup and its just very difficult to discuss... especially a big saga type thing. An album of "slice of life" episodes could probably be released early and I wouldn't complain too much.

Don't hold back, Peachey, tell us how you really feel! I certainly wouldn't call this the Dark Ages of AIO; the writing, the acting and especially the production have been pretty good lately; not incredible, but good (I've only listened to the first two episodes of GRC so far, so maybe there's some incredible yet to come).
Brock noted on the Facebook page that Vol. 55 is planned for a February download, with the hard copy coming out as late as four months later. They're doing it half right, by releasing the physical album after the episodes air, but the early download doesn't help much. (And are those a few of our members I see commenting on that page?)

Not only ratings, but most of the time the filming hasn't all been done before the show starts.... maybe 4-5 episodes before the premiere. The unique thing about AIO is that they do all their 12 episodes before the first one airs. And I understand that concept. Except the urge to get the stuff out of their hands and into listeners hands... might be a little much.Boswell wrote:You would never expect a TV show to release the Blu-ray box set before the TV airings, would you? While I haven't liked anything that has gone on with AIO since the first episode of album 51, I have to agree that giving out the digital version or even the hard copy before all the episodes have aired is... not kind, and somewhat annoying. Peachy is right. Spoilers all around. I don't have to listen to the episodes at all - I already know what they are about by coming on here. It's like when I watch Chuck. I'm three hours behind. The east coast gets everything before the west coast... guess who sees a new episode first?
But of course, no one can leave for two months and then come back - ha. That's ridiculous. Three hours is understandable, but annoying.
We get hints. Loads of hints! We get some sound clips *yes? IDK. I don't pay much attention anymore*. But that should be ALL we get before an episode airs on the radio. How do you think TV shows do it? Yeah. Give out two promos, give or take, maybe give out a clip or two... give out a few hints a month or so in advance, give the episode title... then the episode. The full season doesn't even come out until the next season has STARTED *unless the show doesn't come back. Then when everything else picks back up at the end of September* And TV shows thrive from that.
So, I'm with most of you.
And Boswell.... I like what you said. Even though, what Focus should do if the decision was to release one episode at a time... release it the day after it airs on the radio. While there is a season pass for tv shows, people get the episode the day after it airs. That means they watch it on their TV, or they get it the next day. Their choice. It would probably keep the spoilers down for us, and people would still get instant gratification... which to me is where this is all headed. We want everything NOW, not later. We don't want to wait a week or a month or even two months. We want it now! We don't want to wait once a week for an episode. We want to have already heard them. And to be honest... this philosophy is SO TRUE, but SO LAME!!!!!!!!!!! :/ And I wish we all could have patience, which has been thrown into this conversation.
*sigh* While I'm not a dedicated listener anymore, I can definitely stand by the choice that... things aren't exactly... in a word, balance.
