Twilight is awesome

"Books? You want books?! Ha! We've got books on hairy otters, on onions and on mars! All the fungus you could care for, plus, three triple zillion stars. We've got books on flossing teeth, plus three books on tossing sheep. If we spent our lives just counting books, we'd never get to sleep!" -Leopold the Librarian ("The Great Wishy Woz")

See, the thing about it is that there are books, and then...there are books.

Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. Whether you hate one, hate both, love one, love both, they are incredibly well-written, popular stories with interwoven plots and amazing character development. I can certainly see high schoolers studying HP and LotR.

Twilight...what does it have? Cheap lust disguised as love, vampires that get their nickname "Meyerpires" from the fact that they're such failures at being what they are, a cast of totally static Mary-Sues, and a popularity that only came from the movies made about them that were only sightly better than the books themselves. I cannot see anyone studying Twilight for anything besides what not to read.

Rad and I were talking about it...and she does. :x
The latter the setting the more I like them. Courtship of the old days was so elegant and had more taboos that can allow a good story to flourish.

Anyway, feel free to get back on topic.

Okay. Normally, I'm no Twilight fan... but I have to object to a few things in your post, Tiger.
TigerintheShadows wrote:Twilight...what does it have? Cheap lust disguised as the hormonal obsession of a teenager,
Er, did you mean "as love" there? "cheap lust" and "hormonal obsession" are pretty close in my book.
TigerintheShadows wrote:vampires that get their nickname "Meyerpires" from the fact that they're such failures at being what they are,
In her defense... y'know, the sparkle-dream.
TigerintheShadows wrote:a cast of totally static Mary-Sues,
Hey. I will give you Edward and Bella -- that is to say, the two main characters who take up most of the plot -- but it does have good supporting characters, and whatever Bella may be, I think she dodged the "totally static" label when she had a total depressive breakdown for a major chunk of New Moon after Edward left, and for a time, actually became interesting on her own terms.

If nothing else, I'm afraid that this is patently untrue. The books were extremely popular, deserved or not, before the movie adaptations.

Yeah, I know. Haha. Tiger, you failure.

They were popular, yes, but not extremely so. I suppose we all have our definitions of extremely popular, but mine is that second grade girls are reading them, as they are doing now--that just didn't happen back before the movies came out.

But yeah, I'll give you those other two, although most readers felt like Bella's constant Wangsting over Edward in New Moon wasn't really angst, it was just annoying.

It sounds like an awfully boring few minutes. I'd have to bring along a book.

Agreed. Complex stories with diverse characters and individual personalities, all with some end goal to work for the good of others. Not pointlessly wandering around with the only goal being romance (with a side of drama/adventure to try to prove that it's not just a romance).

Personally, the reason I am doing my best not to get into it is because I can't stand this whole fad for vampires. I mean when did vampires get so popular?
