I listened to a couple of random tracks from some of the old Christian rock groups, but they weren't as good as the bands now. :anxious:

Petra is easily in my top three favorite Christian bands... I'm not sure exactly where it falls among the other two, DC Talk and Relient K, but it's up there. :x

Ooooh. I love Petra (Listen to the Petra Praise album. Awesome!)

I have heard of most of the others. Carmen makes me laugh. I was so into him when I was in elementary school. Who's in the house? JC

Is Petra God-glorifying? And how would it rate on the Rock scale? (Soft, medium, hard..)

Good question Invisible Ninja. In my opinion, Petra's music has changed quite a bit over the years. They went from being more medium rock to harder rock. I personally really liked their earlier albums especially, Petra Praise 2. My absolute fav. I have listened to parts of some of their newer songs on ITunes, and don't care for them as much now. As far as God-glorifying, I think their focus has shifted away from more worship-style songs to a rocking focus. I have looked at the lyrics of some of their more recent songs, and they are missing more of the worship aspects. Kind of disppointing to me! :noway:

My favorite stuff from Petra is the material from the late 70's, first half of the 80's. They still have some good songs after that, but that was probably their golden era. Overall, I haven't seen any decline in their "glory to God", they've always been pretty good about that, in fact almost all of their songs are based on specific scripture if you read the album notes. Their final new album (their last album was just a live recording of their Farewell Tour so it had lots of older stuff again) was slightly harder rock and definitely didn't sound like Petra... it was still okay, though. If you are randomly curious and want to waste money (or listen for free online) I'd recommend "The Rock Block" (one of many greatest hits sets) and maybe the Farewell album. \:D/

And Larry Norman ("I Wish We'd All Been Ready")

I do remember Stryper and Petra (still around?), and DeGarmo and Key, and the Res Band? I think Twila Paris goes back to the '70s and the early days of "Jesus music."

Then I guess Amy Grant came along in the '80s and pretty much put CCM more to the mainstream

Stryper's still around, but Petra broke up a couple years ago... :(
