The Town of Odyssey

Less than half an hour ago, we had an earthquake! It was a decent sized one, 5.8 centered about 5-10 miles from here. It was followed by a little 2.8 aftershock 5 minutes later. Rattled the house pretty well, but didn't knock anything over.

I never used to worry with these things, but having kids is different. I always fear now when I hear the rumble at the beginning that it could be "the big one." The baby was eating in his highchair, so I promptly grabbed on to the tray thinking it would steady him(?). Kimberly was across the way at a friend's, so we went and checked in pretty soon after. She was kinda in denial about it actually being an earthquake.


For the rest of you who've felt them or not, are you afraid or excited about earthquakes?

Glad to hear everyone is fine your house, Darcie. I thought of you guys when I saw the big headline of the earthquake.

I felt an earthquake once!! Back in Indiana, a few years ago, I think. But it just made a few glass things make noise... Nothing big.

My sister used to live in California and used to really freak out about earthquakes...

I've never experienced an earthquake - I think I prefer life that way.

I hate things like earthquakes, tornadoes etc. I told a friend of mine I was going to college in California and she's like "Well, if California falls off into the ocean, can I have your violin?" I found her words most encouraging.

Psh, California has been around for awhile and not come anywhere close to falling into the ocean. Unless you count mudslides and beachside cliffs collapsing and stuff...

I think this was the strongest one I've felt where I've been so close to the epicenter. But unless it is a big giant one, an earthquake like this is fairly harmless. It's a little like a free rollercoaster ride.

Hmmm... I wonder if it was the "big" one we had back in 2003.

I've experienced a few earthquakes. The first one I was terrified because I had just finished reading a book about the Wrath of the Lamb earthquake. The other ones were just a tad bit disconcerting, but not too scary.

Never been in an earthquake, but I know some friends who have, so I have a healthy respect.

A friend of mine is visiting Cali and she just updated her Facebook status about this. lol I'm glad you guys are okay though!

I totally did not feel it at all. And the funny thing was, my Grandma (who lives in Lancaster, only 40ish miles away) was calling at the exact moment the earthquake hit. A ton of phones apparently went down at that moment over there (they got hit kinda hard), so we got cut off in the middle of our conversation.

Hearing about how she's in the middle of an earthquake and then her phone suddenly cutting us off doesn't help my nerves at all, oh no... >_>;

Haha. That's funny Forte... (Going off topic for one second: We were in the middle of a tornado a few years back and my brother had to leave for college. He said he got to his dorm and saw that we were hit really bad. He couldn't get in touch with us because no phones were working. I guess he was kinda scared, too.) Anyways, Back on topic. I didn't feel the earthquake.

That was a Bernard quote from Fifth House on the Left. When the earthquake strikes Eugene is at the studio, but Bernard is at their house and that line is him wishing that Eugene was at the house to measure the earthquake. Silly Glenn!
