The results are in! This was one of the closest weeks ever with 10 of the 15 games played being decided by 7 points or less! However, through all of this chaos, two players have emerged with a total of 11 correct games, and they are... *drum-roll* Bookworm and Godisawesomeness99! The winner will be decided by tonight's game with Bookworm going with Pit and GiA going with Cin... Great job you two, and may the odds be ever in your favor \:D/!

Here are the results:

Bookworm - 11 correct (Pit)
GiA - 11 correct (Cin)
Skylerbuck - 10 correct
Top - 10 correct
KF - 10 correct
Eugene the Second - 10 correct
AE - 9 correct
Astronomer - 9 correct
Jehoshaphat - 8 correct
Ryder - 8 correct

At this moment, I am 3-11 with two games to go. How is it even possible to do that poorly? >_>

This was composed after Week 1 but I’ve been unable to post it until now because I had to use my posts during my trip to be sure I got my picks in.
Thanks for covering for me AE.

First week of football and the officials have already made not only a mistake, but the mistake: a wrong call that directly affected the game - possibly to the extent of even changing the winner.

During the Packers/49ers game, Keapernick took off running as he often does and was caught down the sideline by Clay Matthews who took him out with a flying tackle. The problem is Keapernick was already out of bounds, so Matthews was flagged for a late hit.
Side note here: The hit was not intentional. Matthews was already leaving the ground before Keapernick stepped out, there was nothing he could have done to avoid the collision. That doesn’t change the play, intentional or not it was definitely a penalty and had to be called, and it was, so no problem there, but it should affect the possibility of a fine, which I hear is pretty likely. There shouldn’t be one, it wasn’t on purpose.

Anyway, back on point. The 49ers took exception to the hit and started a fight which resulted in one of them being flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct. While determining how to enforce the penalties, the officials presumably mistook the late hit for unnecessary roughness; a small but significant distinction.
While unnecessary roughness is a part of the play, a late hit is after the play is over. If it had been unnecessary roughness, then you would have a flag on the play on the Packers and a flag after the play on the Niners, which would mean offset the penalties and replay the down. But with a late hit, both flags were dead ball penalties, meaning they still offset, but after keeping the result of the play. The officials incorrectly went with the first scenario, offsetting the penalties and letting San Francisco replay the down.

You might say ‘Okay, they should have known better, bad on them, but it was just a mistake.’ Not quite. The down they let them replay was a third down. The replayed play resulted in a touchdown. They should have been facing a fourth down, because Keapernick hadn’t run far enough, and just kicked a field goal. Instead of increasing their score slightly, they increased it a lot. The Packers couldn’t recover.

We can’t say for certain if this affected the overall outcome of the game, the Packers were being slightly outplayed, so it’s possible even kept to a field goal there San Francisco would have still won, but it’s far from a sure thing. Green Bay really picked things up toward the end of the game and was making good strides to close it up. If the margin back at that play had been the three points it should have been instead of the seven they got, there’s a good chance the Packers would have had a fighting chance. But as it was, there was too much to make up.

I hear the referee has been downgraded by the NFL, so at least there is some accountability this time, but it doesn’t do the Packers any good.
