Usually not. For me, avatars more so influence the assertions I make about people's personalities.

As for how I picture people, if I've seen a photo of them, I imagine them that way. If I haven't seen a photo, I imagine a vague image that fits their personality.

Now, as many others have said, avatars do help me identify people. Which is why all these Narnia sets are getting really annoying!

Subconsciously, I do picture a lot of people as being the avatar for purposes of recognition. The best examples are people who have been around and kept the same names like Laura and Watson. AE actually kind of does resemble Edmund , so that helps and I suppose I have been conditioned to associate Jelly with Justin Bieber for reasons totally unrelated to the ToO. Oh, and Danadelfos had the Legolas avatar for a long time, and I've come to associate Catspaw with one CareBear or another. There are a few others here and there. Back when people used the political avatars more frequently, I used to associate names with faces that way too.

I tend to use the avitars to identify people. Like if I see Larry the cucumber, I know it's Iluvsns.
