I just found out that Up is being shown in 3D here! Thanks to those of you who have recommended that version - I'm planning on seeing it hopefully in the near future.

Saw it without 3D, and loved it! I wanted to cry in a few places, laughed in most, and found it a bit... hmm... odd. Some of those things... definitely will make a kid's mind think things WAAYY off from the real thing (like the laws of physics and ALL so many other things... but, hey, that's what being a HS student does to you... you notice everything it seems that isn't correct in made-up things...)
Great movie.+

I went and saw it on Saturday. What?!?! KBT saw a movie?
I know. It was pretty good. It had some pretty funny lines. I always listen carefully for AIO actors (especially Jess Harnell) in animated movies, but I didn't spot him.
Now, I feel obligated to watch it again, like that's ever going to happen. Anyway, 3 out of 5 stars.

Yeah, um, I'm pretty sure I've never seen a movie before that can make you cry in the first 5 minutes. But Pixar can do anything, so...Felicity Blackgaard wrote:It was so cute! I cried quite a bit. XD
EDIT: I also just had a lightbulb moment. About Jess Harnell. So, I couldn't remember any nurses in the movie...except now I just thought about those two guys who come to take Carl to the Shady Oaks Retirement Home. Do you think...

I just got back from seeing Up in 2D - an excellent film with a lot of heart-warming and tear-jerking moments. The opening ten minutes definitely caught me off guard. As Jugglah said, it's not often a movie brings viewers to tears so quickly.
But my favorite moment was near the end when Carl saw all the photos Ellie had added to her scrapbook. That scene made the whole movie for me. I can't say it was my favorite Pixar film ever, but it definitely exceeded my expectations and deserves a second viewing.
Unfortunately, I missed Jess Harnell's lines, too.
Who the heck was Nurse AJ?

I think he was the dude from the nursing home. I figured he was probably the black dude, but maybe he was the white dude.Trent DeWhite wrote:I just got back from seeing Up in 2D - an excellent film with a lot of heart-warming and tear-jerking moments. I saw Up in 2D this afternoon with my dad and 17-year-old brother. I must've been looking pretty young, since the ticket seller asked me how old I was before we paid.
Anyways, the three of us loved Up! Some thoughts:

- The short with the bad cloud who created animals that abused his respective stork was amusing, though I wasn't sure-- did that cloud choose to create the abrasive animals, or was he incapable of creating the cute cuddly creatures?
- Phenomenal story! Knowing the backstories about Ellie and the explorer dude really enriched the present events. The numerous flashes to pictures of Ellie and the Paradise Falls pic with the colorful house pasted in made things personal and made Carl a deeper character.
- Since there are few Asians in the media, I found it interesting that the creators made Russell Asian, and an atypical one (round, from a broken family).
- Since my youngest brother just finished cub scouts, I loved that Russell was a scout and a naive one at that.
- I was impressed and touched by the attentiveness to detail, for example when Carl pinned Russell with the very grape pop cap Ellie pinned him with.
- I liked how the relationship between Carl and Russell developed over the course of the film.
- When the talking dogs entered the film, I was a little worried that things would be headed downhill. I was happy that this didn't happen.
- When a bunch of dogs fell to their death in a chasm with a river at the bottom while pursuing our heroes, did anyone else think of a similar story?
I'm glad you explained your lightbulb moment, Jugglah, because you just enlightened me!Jugglah wrote:EDIT: I also just had a lightbulb moment. About Jess Harnell. Maybe neither one. Possibly the clouds were assigned the types of animals they create. Which could explain how he can be both proud of what he makes and wistful towards the clouds that make other animals. Or it could just be a case like "The Ugly Duckling", where he's sort of an incompetent misfit, so that's why he makes animals nobody likes.Taq wrote:The short with the bad cloud who created animals that abused his respective stork was amusing, though I wasn't sure-- did that cloud choose to create the abrasive animals, or was he incapable of creating the cute cuddly creatures?
