679: The Green Ring Conspiracy Part 1
This is the place to discuss only the first episode - please do not share spoilers if you have heard past this episode, or at least clearly label anything with a spoiler tag so that people can avoid reading anything they don't want to! If you want to discuss the whole album, click here.
I heard the first episode through the podcast, as many others did as well, and it made me really look forward to the rest of the album! I think it will be hard to discuss episodes one at a time, since it sounds like they are very connected, but for people who are listening weekly, it's still good to have a place to talk about what is going on and develop theories and so on.

Where's the poll?
It was a pretty good episode, but it kind of eliminates a little of the suspense/surprise of having a conspiracy story arc because we've known about it for so long (as opposed to Novacom). 4 out of 5, a good start.

I liked this episode. It's hard to really judge it since I haven't heard any others, but I like it so far.
I love when Eugene says: "Loudly exclaimed euphemisms escape me!"

Yes it does, (but if it does I have never heard it), but this is what on the ToO is called spam, a post that doesn't contribute anything to the conversation.Parker Family wrote:Does a Duck's quack echo?
Now for my review:
This episode is sounds very similar to earlier episodes with aspects such as Eugene using his more traditional ways of speaking and his idiosyncrasies such as correcting peoples grammar. Andre Stojka's Whit is sounding more and more polished each episode and is far less distracting than it was in AIO51. Connie is taking art courses!
As it was appropriate for Connie going to college it was also my favourite line within the episode. (I do believe I will be using this line in the future). Also due to spoilers from members of this board inconsiderate enough not to label things with spoilers the ending of the episode with who was in the hospital was spoiled and of no surprise.Eugene Meltsner wrote:Loudly exclaimed euphemisms escape me!
Overall a good episode 3.5/5 I do believe is suitable.

I think Stelleto is Dr. Blackguard or Jason, but more likely Blackguard because I have a hard time believing that someone working for Jason would be so evil.
I thought the "Appleberry" phone part was very funny.
From this episode I think we can figure out Whit's age. In Ice Fishing (aired January 20, 1990) Monty sounds 10ish (I'm guessing), Now in Marth 12, 2011, Monty is 20ish. That means that in 21 years, about 20 years have passed in Odyssey. Which means that there is about a 1:1 ratio of earth years to Odyssey years. Whit had most likely joined the navy by 1944 in WWII. The youngest he could have been at the time was 18. (I think he might have had to been older though.) It is now 2011, which means 67 odyssey years have past, and Whit is at least 85 years old. (67+18)

But that post did contribute to the conversation. Now we won't have anyone else asking that question because of the episode.Yes it does, (but if it does I have never heard it), but this is what on the ToO is called spam, a post that doesn't contribute anything to the conversation.

Oh wow... And you were spamming by talking about how it was spam since what you're saying has absolutely nothing to do with the topic. I think you mean 10 years. Monty would've aged 10 years in 20 real years. Meaning the ration would be 2:1, and Whit would be 152 and Connie would be 64. I think the only solution is that since Monty is in DeMoines and NOT Odyssey, he's not subject to the same time-space continuum that everyone in the town, like Whit and Connie, are.Moontide wrote:From this episode I think we can figure out Whit's age. Bennett brought up the idea that since these parts are all so connected, individual polls don't really make as much sense as they usually do, so I didn't bother to add a poll. If somebody else creates a discussion thread next week and wants to add a poll, that's fine, but it does seem like the kind of thing where the big picture is the focus, not the individual pieces.DanP740 wrote:Where's the poll?

As for the surprise angle, when I pick up a mystery book, I know that there will be a mystery...but I still like to try to figure out what's going on.
I loved this episode! A good start! I think that the only problem was it was slightly boring. 4.7/5 I liked Dirk Bags. I love the play on "Dirt Bags" Thats what it sounds to me! Plus I liked Eugene when he opens the bag of money!
...I'd rather have a poll for each one. Why can't we rate each episode individually?

I think you are wrong about Whit's age (but right about Monty's aging), because if Monty aged 10 years in 20 real years would mean that a 1:2 ratio of Odyssey years to real years. (I. E. for every year in Odyssey, two real years pass.) That would mean that Whit is 51.5 ((67/2)+18) years not 152.I think you mean 10 years. Monty would've aged 10 years in 20 real years. I finally got to listen to the first episode, since I'm waiting until the air dates - now I can join in on all the discussion.
Great first episode...can't wait to hear more! Monty coming back was a surprise for me, since I've been avoiding all the threads related to GRC. Very suspenseful.

I agree with DanP. As hard as it may seem, some of the episodes truly are distinguishable from the rest, so it would be nice to be able to vote individually.
The Conspiracy Begins
(My episode reviews will always include spoilers, but only for this episode.)
I always thought golf did stand for "gentleman only; ladies forbidden". Learn something new every day, eh?
The entire first scene sounds so fake! "What's...it...called...the..."square one" club?" Then comes the amazing line, "We've talked about this, Emily." Do preteens actually talk this way? I sure didn't when I was their age. Thankfully, Jay saved the next part. "I'd love to stay and chat, but uhh... that would keep me from leaving."
"My parents watch you on the 11'o'clock news... puts them to sleep every night, hehe." Jay's second amazing line of the episode. The episode continued to pick up with the news reports and Dirk Bags showing up at Uncle Wally's house. However, things turn another turn for the worse by including Nelson. His character was so useless.
Is that Earn Boen doing the Radio Theatre advertisement?
Overall, this was an excellent start to a great album!
Best Scene: Whit finding out about Monty
Best Quote: "That's... Monty, my grandson!"
Best Character: Uncle Wally
4.2/5 Stars, or A-

Yeah, sorry about that. I realized afterwards what I'd done, doubling instead of halving....Moontide wrote:I think you are wrong about Whit's age (but right about Monty's aging), because if Monty aged 10 years in 20 real years would mean that a 1:2 ratio of Odyssey years to real years. Just wanted to say that Eugene's line "Loudly exclaimed euphamisms escape me!" is actually quite inaccurate. A euphamism is a word used to replace a word that would not be politically correct or tactful in a certain situation. For instance, saying "passing away" instead of "dying". So, Eugene didn't really replace anything with another word. A more accurate line would probably be "Loudly exclaimed exclamations escape me". But, you know, that would't be quite as funny.

Oh yeah, and Emily was crazy annoying/mean. And to think, throughout the album,

Of course he didn't replace anything with another word; that's why he said "escape me". It makes sense to me.Trixie Belden wrote:*pops in*

Edit: And, actually, the irony is that exclaiming "loudly exclaimed euphemisms escape me" is in itself is a euphemism for something much worst that people might yell out in that kind of situation.
