File Sharing
Since I was in Jr. High I've had many a cd burned by a friend and given to me with the promise of "Dudd this will be the best thing you ever listened to!" I work with Jr. High kids now and am aware that many of them download music off the internet. My dad, a pastor, has opened some files off our work network from other church staff members who wanted him to listen to certain songs, he dosen't listen to them anymore but they are still in his itunes library on his laptop now. In Bible college a roomate of mine recieved from another roomate some movie files from his external hard drive to take to watch on the plane of his mission trip. My youth pastor, now a prominent worship leader, gave me several albums off his laptop before I graduated.
I'm wondering what you all think. The act of filesharing seems to be something a lot of people are involved in. Something I struggle with sometimes is wondering if it is sinful, and if it is, what is the fate of the many many christian's out there who are participating in it freely, or struggling with the ethics of it?

I was always under the impression that the laws allow for a certain degree of file sharing by those who are legitimate owners of digital media.
For instance, I believe that you can burn CDs that you own and whatnot, as long as it is not done for commercial/resale purposes and they are only shared between your friends.

You can share some of it some of the time, but you can't share all of it all the time--I think that is the basic rule.Sherlock wrote:I was always under the impression that the laws allow for a certain degree of file sharing by those who are legitimate owners of digital media.

we're a little stricter and believe that we can burn CDs that we own and share it - among family members only. We don't even do it with our friends. And even when we share it, it's normally not that often and only between my brother and myself.Sherlock wrote: For instance, I believe that you can burn CDs that you own and whatnot, as long as it is not done for commercial/resale purposes and they are only shared between your friends.

Yeah, that's my opinion on it too, although I have one or 2 burnt cd's that aren't from within the family. I had a John Mayer cd that I borrowed from a friend and my mom didn't want me to burn it to the computer about a year ago... Lame... I try not to burn cds. If I really like one, then I'll buy it.King Butter Turtle wrote:If it's not currently available for purchase, I don't see a problem with. Otherwise, for Christians, even if it's not technically "sinful", it's probably not the most Christ-like thing you could do.
I do what I do.
