No, Pixar has been around for a long time. Since the early 90's Pixar and Disney had a distribution agreement that gave Disney 60% of the profits. That agreement ends in June when Cars is released. Disney didn't want to lose Pixar (b/c they have become incapable of making animated blockbusters), hence this new deal.

WHY???????????
WHAT IS JOBS THINKING?????
*sigh*
Maybe this isn't as bad an idea as it seems.
*hates Pixar and Jobs for giving in*
Actually I don't think they gave in as much as Jobs pulled out another brilliant business move.
Jobs is no dummy (as you helped argue earlier in this thread) you have trust that he knows what he is doing.
I think the biggest thing about this whole announcement is Lasseter's leaving Pixar. True, he will have a tremendous impact on his area of Disney and might make animated films something to go see again like they were in the early 90's, but Pixar will really miss him.
But in retrospect, there are other creative minds that can and have stepped up to the task at Pixar while Disney looks lost. So this is probably the best thing with BOTH companies in mind.
Overall, I'm extremely excited to see what will happen in the next 2 years or so

Holy God in love became
Perfect man to bare my blame
On the Cross He took my sin
By His death I live again
