It's John Williams. He is awesome like that. 8-)

But yeah '99 was a great movie year, went to a lot of movies after school back then. It was like... $3.50 a ticket at the time. Saw a lot of those mentioned, although I forget exactly what I saw in theaters and what we rented later. I totally remember Matrix, though.. that was like the most groundbreaking thing ever, then everything actiony tried to copy it for the next five years and it got old.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was the most fantastic, best movie I've ever seen! It was stunning. Brilliant. It was just so weird and funny...

^It was nice to finally get to see what would happen if Goldfinger and Dick Van Dyke were pitted against each other.

This was actually one of the first movies that came to mind when I saw the topic title. It doesn't get much credit as an original film, but it really is a wacky, unusual story that bedazzled me as a kid.

Because Ian Fleming is an awesome author like that.

Not sure how he changed his mindset from James Bond to write a children's story, though.

Original, huh?

Inception almost takes the cake for pretty dang original in my opinion, but that took three watches to finally go "oh" - and a slight Tom Hardy moment. What can I say.

Though, coming from Hollywood, original is very, very hard to pin down anymore. Original is difficult. Though, another movie I call very original isn't from Hollywood, it had its moment of greatness. Third Star. Though, it is technically unrated in the states. British Indie-type film.

Though, do comic book movies even count? Because of their source? I do love V for Vendetta and Captain America: the First Avenger, and Iron Man - and they are original. Just, have an origin of source.

And War Horse seems like any other war and horse movie, it doesn't seem like that to me.

Why does ORIGINAL seem hard to figure out? lol.

I saw it new, in the theater, so not spoiled. Because I'm old. :(
I WISH I could have been old enough to see newly released films back in 1999. :( To my knowledge, most memorable year for excellent and groundbreaking films.. ever.

American Beauty
The Matrix
The Sixth Sense
Eyes Wide Shut
Being John Malkovich
Fight Club
Magnolia
Star Wars Episode I: Phantom Menace
The Insider

..and for good measure:
The Iron Giant
Toy Story 2

That was oonnne exciting year.
{shakes head} The Phantom Menace was a shame to the existence of Star Wars. I could have handled it if they made it as a side movie for kids, as yes, it was a good kids' movie...but it didn't belong in the ranks of the central Star Wars story.
I didn't realize Matrix was '99...wowzers. But as I've said, that was a good one!

^I definitely get what you're saying; I grew up watching Star Wars and I did like Phantom when I first saw it and there are definite bright spots (young Obi-Wan, Anakin's mom, Padme, etc.) but it (and kinda the other two prequels) seemed more like a video game than a movie. I've probably ranted awhile about what I'd change about Phantom and the rest before; don't feel like it right now though.

as far as original films, they've already been mentioned: Inception, Memento, The Dark Knight. Also, I think Hook, Collateral, and The Terminator are all pretty original to me.

Hook, wow, I'm surprised someone brought that up. It was quite a great film as far as a dramatization of fairy tales go. (unlike snow white and the huntsman which I saw the midnight premiere of recently, horrible.)

yeah, I randomly thought of Hook, just because some people don't like it, but I definitely see how great it is. And was snow white that bad? I'm rather curious about it.

It was very....forgettable. Kristen Stewart is a horrible actor...horrible, and the whole action elements of it were rather boring themselves, I never really felt like I knew what any of the characters purpose was...egh, it was just lame.

I really liked Hook because it made the Peter Pan fantasy very real life. I could totally believe it happened after that. Same reason why I like Ever After. Not placing it on this list, just relating... It puts a sense of reality behind the fairy tale.

Hook gets a bad rap for the most part, but it was always my favorite growing up as well. Ever After is also a favorite. \:D/
