As far as my smiley background goes, back in the early days of the SS, we had like two smileys to pick from and we were grateful for them. 
The number of smileys the ToO has is still a little bit overwhelming to me.
My favorite ToO smileys are (obligatory) and 
. I think current smiley usage is fine, but it could probably be upped a little. Personally I find that tasteful and creative use of smileys is much more important than the number. I always like when someone is able to find a niche one that fits a situation well.
