I don't think the actress for Katrina is the problem. I think it's the lines they are giving her. They could give her something happier to say and direct her better.

Didn't Eugene go to college when he was about 10? Maybe he felt like his foster parents never really understood him well. Those would have been his formative years. We all know what his foster dad said about Katrina. I can see why he may not have felt close to them.
