Thanks to Clodius, I'm now curious about what the J means too! I don't think that I've seen that one, but if it's becoming popular I'm sure I eventually will. I guess this puts me at the cutting edge of emoticon receivership. J is avant-garde. It is forward-thinking. It's a revolution in emoticon e...

Re: If in doubt, leave it out.

A high school English/History teacher applied it to commas. I say, apply it to emoticons. :x With the ease of clicking an emoticon to puncture (heh) your point, I've found that I've developed an emoticon dependency. In emails I have to manually type them *gasp* and far, far worse... how do you hand...

I might as well hijack this thread: does anyone know the origin of the titular phrase? I know that David Barton popularized it in his various attempts to rewrite American history, but presumably the phrase has some basic in fact. I believe I once read that a small group of Presbyterian protesters ch...

Exodus, a 1960 film based on the Leon Uris novel of the same name. It's long (210 minutes), but well worth viewing.

I scored 9 in "left-brained" and 3 in "right-brained," but, of course, there's little credence to any of this (which I'm sure they'd characterize as a left-brained thing to say).

Gustav Mahler's symphonies and a smattering of Sibelius, not that the two really go together.

As Stryper pointed out, there's nothing to the allegation about the Colts cheating in that game, though, watching it, I caught the odd crowd noise modulation and wondered what it was. I can see why some people would have suspected foul play, though it would certainly have been odd timing to pull out...

So, does good sportsmanship militate against running up the score on an opponent in the NFL? I'm very much opposed to the practice in high school and college football, but less sold on the concept in the pros, as it's hard to feel sorry for players being paid millions to take the field a few times. ...

I outlined my many problems with Huckabee here a few months back. The short version is that he's a big government populist, which, naturally, doesn't play well with conservatives like myself. The only problem is that Ron Paul is a kook, Mitt Romney is running away from his record and becoming increa...

I've seen amusing clips from that (YouTube has a few, for instance), but probably wouldn't care for much of the film. Still, the Inquisition song is funny, in bad taste though it may be.

Perhaps the strangest film I've ever seen, Dr. Strangelove, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. Not really recommended, and certainly only with about a hundred caveats.

Rather incredibly, there are many sites on the internet that fill similar, often overlapping niches; in short, the tubes are nothing like the old AOL. Sometimes, you even have cheap knockoffs.

No; a Pareto-optimal outcome would be the other one I described, in which none see their condition worsen, and the lot of at least one improves. Good try, though; any other takers?

Okay, let's do this with an example: If we had a very bizarre society in which everyone made either $100,000 or $30,000 / year (presume that there are an equal amount of each_, and we stumbled upon a policy that would bring everyone earning $30,000 / year up to an annual income of $60,000 while only...
