The Music of The Underground Railroad

I'm a musician in my free time, and ran across something cool while listening to The Underground Railroad tonight. Composer Antonin Dvorak wrote his Symphony #9, "The New World", in 1893 while traveling to America. He wanted to use part of the symphony to touch on the issue of slavery, and...

Re: Catching Up

Thanks for the input all, I think I'll do the idea of getting a one month subscription once a year and catch up. In any case I've been bitten by the bug again, so to speak.

Catching Up

Got a question for people still listening to the show. Here's the deal; when the club came out, I was decidedly not happy about it. My car has a CD player, I wanted to buy albums and listen that way. What I didn't want to do was pay a monthly subscription fee. Didn't take me long to break down thoug...

Re: How is everyone doing?

Jonathan, that sounds like fun! I know someone who lived in Japan for a year or two and she really liked it. I was traveling with someone who lived there for a year (and knew the language, thankfully) who really liked it too. I have another friend who lived there for a year who also really liked it.

Re: How Do You Earn Money?

I’ve been working as a scientist for engineering firms for the past few years and can confirm that engineers in general are a “fascinating bunch” they’re either egotistical cretins or the nicest people you’ll ever meet, there’s no in-between. Throw a little bit of social awkwardness in for go...

I am a manager of the engineering and fabrication departments at an aerospace/defense company. :) Raytheon boi. I have had some mild interaction with them. 8-) Does that make me part of the military industrial complex :anxious: I used to work for some lockheed subs, I think we're all part of it at ...

Re: WHY IS THIS PLACE SO DEAD!?

We’re just a forum version of Japan, an overworked, aging population that has antisocial tendencies. ;) On that note I'll be in Japan in a few weeks. My parents didn't care until EK and xaio prank-called my home phone number in real life and suddenly my dad was like "Um... what is this website...

Re: WHY IS THIS PLACE SO DEAD!?

i also wonder how much of the old userbase still listens to aio. bob pointed out that a lot of us are more left-leaning now, and some of us have left christianity entirely. i personally still identify as a christian, but i'm quite left-leaning and don't want to do anything to support the vile hate ...

Re: WHY IS THIS PLACE SO DEAD!?

Bob gave an excellent summation. For my own part I want to elaborate on what Bob wrote. 1. This site started in 2005 as an offshoot of the Town Hall boards, which started around....2000? Someone can help me out with that fact. 2005 was when facebook was in it's infancy and, even more relevantly, Red...
