Wisdom Teeth
I remember that there was an older thread about 'em awhile back, but I don't know if it's still around, and don't have the time to search for it .
In like.. three minutes I'm leaving to have all of my wisdom teeth removed. It came as a surprise, especially since I'm only 16- not 19 or 20 as are the customary ages (or thereabouts). All four are impacted . And the dentist/oral surgeon refuse to do it unless I'm put under... using the Michael Jackson drug . Yay. Exciting.
Anyway- just wanted to let you all know about the fun and EXCITING things I get to do while on vacation . Not :\.

Wow, fun. I hope you enjoy having a swollen face for a couple days.
I will probably have to get mine out earlier too because of the fact that I had braces and not wanting the results of that to be messed up.

I miss my wisdom teeth.
And I refused to let them put me under for the removal.

I had mine pulled out a couple years ago... I'm pretty sure I looked like a chipmunk for about a week.
You mean you were fully conscious when they removed yours?Chandlah wrote:And I refused to let them put me under for the removal.
I get them out next year. as far as I can tell, they're not impacted. but I'm starting to get some psychosomatic pressure in my jaw.
all your fault, I&L.

I probably got 50 shots in my mouth that day. They just had a huge tray of them sitting there so whenever I made a noise they just stuck a couple more in.
Halfway through the procedure when I couldn't possibly respond, the oral surgeon says, "You see why we normally put people under for this?"
The benefit of not going under? This:
During the consultation, the oral surgeon told us how my face was going to swell up badly, especially since I'm a redhead ("They swell up the most"). In reality, I went home afterward, fully conscious, and sat in a chair all afternoon reading "Nightmare Academy" while switching an ice pack back and forth on my cheeks. I looked perfectly normal the next day.Trent DeWhite wrote:I had mine pulled out a couple years ago... I'm pretty sure I looked like a chipmunk for about a week.

One of mine finally poked through the gums and is living happily in my mouth! The rest are still hidden.
I only have three wisdom teeth! I'm just randomly missing two teeth in my mouth for no reason. The bad part is that I look stupid when I smile, 'cause I have five canine teeth. But I have one less wisdom tooth to have out whenever they come in.

Too bad you can't do that with noisy kids.Chandlah wrote:I probably got 50 shots in my mouth that day. They just had a huge tray of them sitting there so whenever I made a noise they just stuck a couple more in.
Well, good for you.Chandler wrote:The benefit of not going under? My reaction was to the surgery, not to the drugs - my cheeks would've puffed up even if they hadn't drugged me up. It's weird, though. My cousin went through the whole routine this past summer (including the drugs) and looked normal the day after.
I didn't say that I would've reacted to the drugs. Staying awake meant that I wasn't out of it afterward and therefore was able to several hours of an ice pack regimen that helped stop the swelling. Another benefit is that they didn't prop my mouth open for the whole procedure like they do when the person is unconscious so I didn't experience the typical soreness in my jaw either.

Gotcha. I thought you were implying that you would've looked like a chipmunk if you'd been drugged.
I iced my face for the rest of the day and, while it numbed the pain, it didn't really stop the swelling.

I think I would take the general anesthesia...

Well I'm back- with four less teeth . The whole procedure was pretty quick even though I was more than a little concerned about being put under (would MUCH rather have had a dozen shots or 'laughing gas').
I sat down, had a monitor hooked up to me, and then got an IV. First she shoved some sort of 'relaxation' thing through my veins and I got a little groggy (more like tired, actually... I was exhausted way before getting to the surgeon's- I've gotten very little sleep in the past week). Then she shoved another dose of it in and I was really out of it even though I was technically 'awake'. The whole room started to spin. It was rather annoying. Finally, I was put out completely with Propofol- or so my dad says (I don't remember it, lol). I dreamed some pretty crazy dreams but can only remember fragments of them like little green men eating things o.O. The next thing I new I was awake and sliding onto a wheelchair in a daze. My whole face was completely numb- I about panicked thinking that my bottom lip was huge . I had gauze shoved in my mouth and I was still really out of it. Put it this way, I can't really remember anything my dad says I said or did >_>. Also, I was literally shivering from being cold.
Anyway, I was moved to a bed while I waited for my dad to get all the antibiotics and what-not that the surgeon wanted me taking. I'm glad I was allowed to lay/sleep there for a little while so that the anesthesia could wear off a little more.
I'm home now (obviously) and took an Advil for the pain. The doctor had given me a thing of narcotics, but I absolutely refuse to take them unless I'm in the kind of pain that would make you pass out.. and even then, that would kind of defeat the purpose .
I'm feeling good, though, so I guess my experience has been pretty awesome . Let's hope it stays this way.

I glad things went well! And considering you wrote a long, understandable post, I'd say you're doing pretty well.

My wisdom teeth haven't come in yet, but I did have to get 9 teeth pulled at once a couple years ago. Including one that was half way up my forehead, so they had to like saw through bone or something to get it out. I couldn't eat anything but jello and pudding for like a month (including Thanksgiving), but I got to suck on bloody tea-bags for a couple day, so that was fun!
Glad everything went well, I&L; hope you continue to feel better.

Haha, yeah- I'm doing great. I'm definitely not going to take anymore Advil, either. My dad bounces back from this kind of stuff real quick, so I guess I take after him, and I've always done great with pain (get that from both my parents- yay ), so I'll just suck it up .V-lady wrote:I glad things went well! I still have all my wisdom teeth despite peer pressure from dentists! And they will stay in mouth, thank you.
I was quite resistant to getting mine removed as well but they fed my parents all the horrifying scenarios of having to have the teeth removed later on so they went ahead and had them removed anyway.Dr. Watson wrote:I still have all my wisdom teeth despite peer pressure from dentists!
My younger brother dragged his feet about getting his removed and his wisdom teeth all grew in fine. And both my parents had theirs grow in fine. I'm sure I would've been okay despite the dental alarmism.
