US Election 2012 Discussion Topic
I had a feeling that would happen...
However... It hasn't been confirmed... It could still (though it's not likely) go either way...
I must ask... What is the reason for the Electoral College?
I mean, I know it's supposed to make it more "fair," or whatever, but what is the exact reasoning behind it, and why doesn't the popular vote override the electoral college if a plurality happens?

The exact reasoning behind it is because it was a system that worked at a specific time because of the technology at the time and that we are to sentimental to get rid of much like the penny.

I just learned that the difference of the popular vote is 991 at last count...
This is entirely too close to call, and it's driving me absolutely up the wall.

I like Canada's electoral system a lot more than the USA's.

Four more years. Then maybe we'll get a decent candidate?

They haven't counted much of the west coast yet. Obama'll take that too.~JCGJ~ wrote:I just learned that the difference of the popular vote is 991 at last count...

*goes back to duck juice*
We have more than 2 main parties so it's not usually a close 50/50 split like this.
This link tells a bunch of differences between them.

There are several other parties in the vote, but no one is going to vote for them because of the nature of the system. Not sure if I posted this one yet:

I do/did!
The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish, but for all to come to repentance. ♡
Yeah, I learned about that in high school a few years ago. In Canada I like how we can have a minority government elected, but the parties that don't win still get a say in most of the decision because of the MP's having a say in all the decisions. The problem then is that they minority parties can form a coalition against the part that had been elected, but that's still okay with me because at lease the majority is still being represented.jasonjannajerryjohn wrote:There are several other parties in the vote, but no one is going to vote for them because of the nature of the system. The only thing that USA has going for it is that it's warmer than Canada. That's pretty much the only reason I would move there.

Ya, don't move to the US. It's... odd. To say the least. Sounds like you have a proportional representation system which I find better.

Which is why I think the third party candidates should be allowed to join the Democrat/Republican debate, and not have to have their own debates hosted by Larry King... (Not that I have a problem with Larry King...)jasonjannajerryjohn wrote:There are several other parties in the vote, but no one is going to vote for them because of the nature of the system.

Yeah, ours is a little more like that than FPTP. I'm not saying that Canada's electoral system is perfect, because there are obviously lots of flaws to it, just like there are to every system, but I just like ours better.
I like what Winston Churchill said. He said that the best argument against democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter. I really believe that. So many voters seem to be uninformed, it's ridiculous.

I love Canada. It's so nice and not inflammatory. I mean, they got independence, sort of, from the British Empire without shedding blood. Also you guys still have a queen so you're technically a monarchy. But not really in practice.

The queen is really just a figurehead. She doesn't do much at all. It's great. Basically all she does is just enjoy being on our coins and sometimes come and visit with her hats and pearls.
And Canada has lots of room for everyone. But the biggest problem is it's so cold. We've had snow on the ground for three weeks here!

Yup. I love the queen so much. She's great. Plus she brings in tourism revenue. Not directly to Canada, generally though, but to the UK.
