I once heard a somewhat reliable source say that Car-mel is the harder candy type, and care-a-mel is the liquid (like butterscotch on ice cream, etc.).

I have heard this too.
I say both by the way. It just depends. I think I tend too use Care a mel more if it is really really good carmel. If it is inexpensive or just bad then i say carmel. Actually I'm just kinda making this up as I go along. I really have no reason for why I say both. I just do.

Interesting! I guess I was kind of expecting it to be this way, but I was expecting more people to say it like care-a-mel. Hmmm... Anyway, I always wondered about this, especially after listening to "Subject Yourself", when Jack said it like "care-a-mel".
