Light's Out at Whit's End

everyone's favorite rap

Whit's wiping down the counter, Connie's mopping the floor, and the kids are sipping on their milkshakes. If you want to talk about Adventures in Odyssey the radio drama, this is the spot to do just that!

Light's Out at Whit's End

Post by Irwin »

I wanted to type up the "Light's Out at Whit's End" rap for this topic, but I spent so much time doing it, that I wanted people to see it.

Here you go:
Harley:

Hay, you on the drum, how ‘bout a little help?

Ok kids, put your hands together.

Now listen here kids, gonna tell you something great, ‘bout some different ways to communicate. You can put up a sign, you can write a book, you can say your life ‘bout the way you look. You can rumble, rubble, you can blabber, you can chadder, you can tabber, you can lecture, you can blab. You can use a pen or paper, or slate and chalk. But the best way to do it is to sit down and talk.

Communicate, communicate, just open up your heart and communicate. We gotta share ideas, there’s no time to wait, and the best way to do it is communicate.

Ok, time for someone else to try. You young lady, come on up here.

Young Lady:
Me?

Harley:

Yeah, go on, take a verse, it’s easy.

Young Lady:

When you talk and it’s funny, it can be a blast, but you really get in trouble if you talk in class.

Harley:

All right Bobby, your turn.

Bobby:

You can talk by your locker, or anywhere you go, you can talk underwater just like Jacque Cousteau!

Adults:

Communicate, communicate, just open up your heart and communicate. We gotta learn to laugh because joy is great, and the best way to do it is communicate.

Harley:

If you wanna make friends with the people you meet. You gotta know conversation, it’s a two way street.

Marianne:

She says hi, and you say hello, now ya gotta a conversation, and away you go.

Harley:

She asked about his friend

Marianne:

He asked about her friend

Both:

That’s good communication, no tellin’ were it ends!

Adults:

Communicate, communicate, just open up your heart and communicate. Wanna learn about your cousin, and your uncle Nate. And the best way to do it is communicate.

Harley:

Common Tom, it’s your turn now.

Tom:

Ok, I’ll try it.

Be swift to hear, be slow to speak, be slow to anger, do you get it, aneek?
Hay, I think I got it. This is fun.
Ok Whit, you try it.

Whit:

I believe I will.

God can take someone who’s lost in sin, and make their life brand new again. But hounding a note, new life is great, if Christians like us don’t communicate.

Adults:

Communicate, Communicate, just open up your heart and communicate. We gotta share the gospel before it’s too late. And the best way to do it is communicate.

All:

Communicate, Communicate, just open up your heart and communicate. We gotta share the gospel before it’s too late. And the best way to do it is communicate.

Harley:

CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW!?

All:

COMMUNICATE!!

[Cheering]

Later...

Harley:

Ah, whit, whit, exuse me, exuse me, I have something very important to say here.

Whit:

What’s that?

Harley:

Hit it. A one, two, three, four...

All:

Communicate, Communicate, just open up your heart and communicate. We gotta share ideas, there’s now time to wait. And the best way to do it is communicate.

Nope, no sarcasm here. Sure, it's bears perhaps too much resemblance to a cheesy corndog, but no more so than most of the other episodes from this era: "Whit's Flop" is ludicrous, "The Tangled Web" is weird on so many levels, and "Gifts for Madge and Guy" is just silly, yet all of these are beloved shows. I think if "Lights Out" hadn't been pulled and expectations hadn't been so high for fans who had never heard it and imagined it to be so wonderful, then it probably wouldn't receive any special notice at all.

Emphasis mine.

But I like cheesy corndogs!

Epic win.

For some reason, whenever reading the episode description, I start laughing. They learn they can have fun without electricity?

No, you never should have.

I'll see you soon.

I finally listened to this episode due to this topic... I'm so proud of my husband. :inlove: ;)

Actually, I was amused by the 80sness of the music, especially the music just after the rap. Reminded me of Captain Eo \:D/

I'd agree that perhaps some of it was that the expectations were high for the episode, but I still think Gifts for Madge and Guy and the Tangled Web are better than Lights Out with or without expectations. The rap still makes me cringe though.

Haha, yeah. Or like they're on some horrible Barney show.

Whit: All right, kids, today we're going to learn how to have fun without electricity!

Kids: Whee! Yay!

Whit: But first, our theme song! I love you, you love me...

Haha! I laughed out loud when I read this! Can't you just picture Whit as a big purple dinosaur?
