Mac vs. PC

If there's something on your mind that just doesn't seem to fall into any of the other categories, well, it quite likely belongs inside Joe Finneman's marketplace. Think of it as a general store for general discussions!

Do you like the Mac or the PC?

Mac + Linux + Windows virtualized onto the same computer at the same time, with virtual desktops; that's the best.

I can run vista, ubuntu, and Mac OS X, through dual boot.

Yeah, I used to run a Hackintosh/WinXP/Ubuntu on the same box but after my Pentium 4 and 640MB RAM started becoming too sluggish for my work, and after I started to need the mobility of a laptop, I got the MacBook. Perfect, because I can dock it to my monitor/keyboard/mouse for desktop work.

However my family has always used macs (since 1995) but when I wanted to build my own computer, I had no other choice. Now I'm back to Mac again. :-

EDIT: Okay another reason I'm starting to dislike Microsoft. I own a copy of Windows XP so I tried to install it on my new laptop so that I could run a few PC-only softwares. (after I reformatted my former HD of course, like a good boy) But because the hardware's different it complained that I couldn't install it. I called the activation line and they still refused, accusing me that I'm installing it on two computers. So my only option is to buy another copy of Windows.

Why do I have to ask big daddy for permission every time I want to use my software I bought?

If you can get a real person on the other end of the line, they're pretty cool about letting you activate again if you tell them you've erased the other drive.

My solution to the problem is to maintain the number of licenses I need, but install a corporate or cracked version to dodge the activation. That way I don't have to deal with activation, but still have all the licenses I'm supposed to have.

Linux isn't as user friendly yet (it's gotten a lot better in the last five years), and all the apps people need aren't there yet. Most people don't have the ability to get a virtual machine running inside of Linux.

It is definitely a step up in user friendliness since the Terminal :P

But yeah a lot of good apps dont work. But I suffice with Open source equivalents, or wine.

The only reason I need to run Windows right now is for a program called ExamView my teachers make me use for taking exams. I tried using WINE to emulate it and it didn't work all that great on OS X. I wonder if WINE on Linux would do better?

I just ordered all the bits for a quad-core (Q6600) box with 4Gb of DDR2 1066 Dual Channel RAM... I should be rocking it by the end of the week. And yes, it's a PC.

Hovering just under $1500 when all is said and done. I'll be using an old video card and replacing it further down the line. The hard drives (most of them) are coming from an old build as well. It's also rackmount.

I wanted to wait another 6 months until Penryn and the next gen from AMD comes out, but needed the processing power immediately for a project with a looming deadline that my current system is choking on.

The driver issues can be brutal. I did one about a month ago. Took about 3 hours to get the drivers sorted out. Fortunately the MB used a realtek chipset, for which there are a plethora of legacy drivers. Still took a while to hunt the right ones down.

It wasn't drivers, I have them on a cd that came with my computer. It was giving me copy errors when I was running setup.
