So, does good sportsmanship militate against running up the score on an opponent in the NFL? I'm very much opposed to the practice in high school and college football, but less sold on the concept in the pros, as it's hard to feel sorry for players being paid millions to take the field a few times.
That said, while I didn't watch the Patriots-Redskins blowout, my understanding is that the Pats staged fourth-down conversions well after the game was effectively over, and continued to advance the chains through the air on first and second down, not just as necessary to keep drives alive, and thus run down the clock. I believe that Brady and company played the whole game, which, setting aside good sportsmanship, is just stupid. (If your star QB suffers a season-ending injury when you're up by more than six touchdowns, the fans are probably going to turn on you in a way that they don't when they find that you "merely" cheated your way to some of your past successes.)
Would 38-7 or 45-7 not have been good enough? Wouldn't that seal the deal? Were they afraid that Jason Campbell would lead a seven-score rally? In short, was there any justification for not just pounding the ball up the middle on practically every play in the fourth quarter?

Yeah, as you said, apart from sportsmanship its just a stupid move. I know the Buckeyes routinely put in their second stringers as the game winds down assuming they have a strong lead (which most of the time is the case )... it makes the other team not look so bad, but much more importantly saves the star players from possible injury...
And surprising no one, the Steelers beat the Bengals... much to my chagrin.

As a Redskin fan, I'm disappointed in the blow out... but I don't fault the Patriots at all. The pros are different than High School or Little League. It isn't about fairness, it's about winning. The patriots did a lot of second and even third string patterns... it looked like they were just out to have fun before playing seriously next week against the Colts.
As someone said: the Patriots look like they are playing "Madden" on the Rookie level. They make this look WAAAYY to easy.

I actually think that the Patriots did bring in their back up QB, but he scored as well. Nevertheless I do agree on the lack of sportmanship on the Patriots side and would really like someone to please beat them. Anyways...Browns won in a close game and we're above .500 which has been extremely rare over the past few years

Don't remind me! It was a sad day when the Redskins lost.Evil Chick wrote:Patriots play the Colts next week... Who will win?
Btw, the Pats played a really good game against the Redskins today. 52-7

Well I guess its nice to know that the only way to beat the Colts is by cheating.
Why do the Patriots still have fans, again?
EDIT: and before someone beats me to it apparently there are allegations that the Colts cheat, too, by pumping in extra sound!

This story was explained this afternoon. Apparently the New England owner heard a slight skip in the crowd noise thus leading him to believe the audio he was hearing was slightly digital. The Commissioner released a statement this afternoon saying that the problem was not the Colts administration but the CBS broadcasting crew. They appearenlty had a problem with their stock sound or something of that effect. The Top Crusader wrote:and before someone beats me to it apparently there are allegations that the Colts cheat, too, by pumping in extra sound!
Many don't buy it and think of it as a cover up but hey...

As Stryper pointed out, there's nothing to the allegation about the Colts cheating in that game, though, watching it, I caught the odd crowd noise modulation and wondered what it was. I can see why some people would have suspected foul play, though it would certainly have been odd timing to pull out such a trick anyway.
I'm confused, though, about the claim regarding the Patriots. What is being alleged about their victory over the Colts, and by whom?

Well, I doubt that they are still doing anything dishonest but I've little respect for a head coach that won't apologize after being caught cheating. To be fair they should have to trade all their first string players to the Bengals.

What STRYPER said. And, also, I said that I wasn't sad, not that it wasn't sad.delayed reaction wrote:Evil Chick wrote:I wasn't sad.jasonjannajerryjohn wrote:Redskins lost. It was very sad.
