Reiterated research from page one:
The names of our weekdays originated with the Romans. The Latin word for day is "dies." The concept for a 7 day week is said to have originated in ancient times in West Asia, most likely in Mesopotamia. Prior to the 7 day week, there were weeks of different lenghts, i.e., 8 days.
At the time that the Romans assigned Latin names to each day, it was thought that everything revolved around the earth. As the Romans saw it, there were 7 celestial bodies revolving around the earth...the sun, moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn.
Now for the Latin names:
Sunday (dies solis) = Sun's day
Monday (dies lunae = Moon's day
Tuesday (dies Martis = Mars' day
Wednesday (dies Mercuru) = Mercury's day
Thursday (dies Jovis) = Thor's day
Friday (dies Veneris) = Venus' day
Saturday (dies Saturn) = Saturn's day
Most Latin-based languages connect each day of the week with one of the seven "planets" of the ancient times. French, for example, uses:
English - French - Planet
Monday - lundi - Moon
Tuesday - mardi - Mars
Wednesday - mercredi - Mercury
Thursday - jeudi - Jupiter
Friday - vendredi - Venus
Saturday - samedi - Saturn
Sunday - dimanche - (Sun)
The link with the sun has been broken in French, but Sunday was called dies solis (day of the sun) in Latin.

I have a sister named Sarah, my parents used that name because it was from the bible. And the name Sarah really means God's Little Princess.Sarah wrote:*cough*
Sarah
Gender: Female
Meaning: Princess
Origin: Hebrew
Yep... that's what mine means...My mom told me what it meant when I was around 4, which wasn't good judgement on her behalf, because ever since then, I expected them to treat my like a princess. My friend Sadie, found out that's what hers meant too, so we were both mad when our parents wouldn't let us buy crowns.
Sarah
My bible name, Rebekah, means Earnest Devotee

Nicole means Victory of the poeple....Thats my name.Rachael wrote:Rachael means 'ewe', but I prefer 'lamb of God'. I'm not sure what Nicole means.
Ashley means from ash tree...hmmm (my middle name)
My screen name Frogalwyz, actually comes from a little poem I read a few years ago. It goes a little something like this:
FROG...Fully Rely On God. He'll accept you warts and all. His grace is free so jump for joy...and always remember FROG. Fully Rely on God.~ Ive been obsessed with frogs ever since.
Funny thing, there are a few Jonathans on here, and that means gift of god. I was babysitting once and they all wanted to know what So I looked them up. Jonathan= gift of god. Nathan means gods gift, and then the last one was Matthew which also means gods gift. I thought that it was kinda interesting that all three brothers names meant the same thing. Those are some gifted parents.
